about

This album is a gathering of recordings in memory of the music of Jim Mills. Jim was an inspired young artist that performed and wrote music by himself and others. At the age of 15, he was tragically killed in a traffic accident during May of 1991. Some of these recordings were made just days before the accident took place. Many songs presented here are roughly recorded and even incomplete in some areas. These recordings exist as a memento to those that knew and loved Jimmy.

Many of these recordings took place at George Washington High School. Some were made by Jim alone in the basement of his home to either document the material for himself or in some cases to share with other band members so that they could learn the songs prior to practice sessions. The Hashbrownies consisted of members that attended the school but didn't live close together so the choice was made to primarily practice in the hallways at school during lunch hours. The practice sessions that occurred began to draw attention of other students who chose to eat lunch at the practice area as well.

For people more familiar with Washington High School: some of the tracks reflect an early morning practice under the arcade near where the nurses office existed at the time. The other location (that the band primarily chose to play) was right at the beginning of the hallway that led to what was known at the time as the "new" gym. This was just outside of the locker rooms and right in front of some entrance doors to the school.

The title of this album is derived from one those practice sessions in the new gym hallway. On one occasion, while working on a song, an unknown girl walked towards the hallway and saw Jim seated on the floor, playing his guitar. She quickly glared at him and muttered, "you think you're so cool don't you?" She proceeded to exit the building towards the parking lot. His immediate response was to stop what he was doing, rise to his feet and call, "I hope you die and rot in hell; I vomit for you" to her as she walked away. This was simply an ironic exhibition of punk rock attitude for comedic effect at the time but it is also evidence his confidence and refusal to be belittled as a young artist.

It should also be mentioned that the term hashbrownies was not intended at the time to be a reference to anything in drug culture. It was nothing more than a combination of McDonald's hashbrowns and brownie products.

The photos used for this page are taken from a show that the band booked and performed at Bever Park. Although actual recordings of that performance do not exist, they are some of the few pictures of the band as a group that were taken at the time.
